Hello Parents,
Welcome to a new school year and a new class at PVE! I am looking forward to teaching and learning with your child this year as they make the transition into 2nd grade where their reading and writing skills will increase dramatically!
Second grade is a wonderful year for discovery and Your child will be required to read at home each night working toward their 25 book requirement as well as any preparation for content area tests or quizzes. In addition to reading, mastery of math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) are needed to successfully achieve in other areas of math: algebra, geometry, measurement and problem solving. Science and Indiana History will be taught on a rotating basis and integrated into reading, writing, and math as much as possible. Students will have access to technology including a Sugar Cane account to study Caesar's English, a unique vocabulary program for young scholars. ALEKS, an individualized program for math and Google slides for presentations will also be a part of our learning.
I love Madagascar hissing cockroaches, rocks, hermit crabs, albino rats, and digging in the dirt. Students know that fourth grade means we will be outdoors often and everyday if possible, for recess. Field trips to the BSU planetarium and a state park are already planned. We will plan other field trips too, and I am looking forward to hearing what your child is interested in discovering this year.
Fourth graders are in charge of EWA recycling. What are some ideas your child has to help our school become more "green?" The 25 book requirement allows students to read from various genres. We will read biographies, novels, poetry, and selected readings in science and social studies to help build knowledge and vocabulary. Science will be hands-on as often as possible. Discovery Quest, Math Bowl, Science Bowl, and Theatre Club are fun ways to be involved and your child will hear about these opportunities when school begins. The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Indiana Council for Economic Education, is a valuable learning experience.
Thank you for attending Open House on Monday. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or comments at [email protected] or use the Remind app once you sign up. I can also be reached at school by calling the office, 765-747-5434 between 7:10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. I look forward to a wonderful year ahead!
